Handfasting Wedding Ceremonies

Handfasting Ceremony Celebrant

A handfasting ceremony is one of the most beautiful and meaningful rituals that can be included in a wedding. Symbolising the joining of two lives, two paths and two hearts, handfasting has ancient roots and remains a powerful and moving moment within many modern celebrant ceremonies.

As a wedding celebrant, I create bespoke handfasting ceremonies that are written specifically for each couple. Whether your ceremony is spiritual, pagan, symbolic or simply romantic, the handfasting ritual can become a deeply meaningful part of your wedding day.

Many couples choose to include a handfasting within their celebrant-led ceremony as a way of representing their commitment to one another in a visual and symbolic way.

What Is a Handfasting Ceremony?

Handfasting is an ancient tradition in which the couple’s hands are gently bound together using ribbons or cords while vows or promises are spoken.

The act symbolises the joining of two lives and is widely believed to be the origin of the phrase “tying the knot.”

Historically associated with Celtic traditions, handfasting has been practised in many forms throughout history and is now a popular ritual in celebrant weddings across the UK.

Today, handfasting ceremonies are often included in:

  • Pagan weddings

  • Spiritual or nature-inspired ceremonies

  • Viking or historical themed weddings

  • Celtic-inspired celebrations

  • Alternative weddings

  • Modern celebrant ceremonies

However, you do not need to follow a particular belief system to include this ritual. Many couples simply love the symbolism and the beauty of the moment it creates within the ceremony.

Creating Your Handfasting Ceremony

Every ceremony I create is completely unique.

When couples first contact me, we begin with a relaxed conversation where I learn about your story, your relationship and the kind of atmosphere you want for your wedding day.

From there I design a ceremony that reflects you as a couple. Your ceremony may include:

  • Your love story

  • Personal vows

  • The exchange of rings or meaningful tokens

  • Readings, poetry or music

  • A handfasting ritual using ribbons or cords

  • Blessings or symbolic elements

  • A ceremonial certificate signing

The handfasting ritual itself can be adapted in many ways depending on the symbolism you would like to include.

Some couples choose a single ribbon to represent their union, while others use multiple cords representing family, friendship or shared values.

Handfasting Ribbons and Cords

For couples choosing a handfasting ritual, ribbons or cords can be selected to match your wedding colours or the symbolism you would like to represent.

Different colours can carry different meanings, and some couples enjoy incorporating symbolism connected to their relationship or future together.

If you choose handfasting as part of your ceremony, I can provide ribbons in your chosen colour palette or discuss other options that suit the style of your wedding.

Pagan and Spiritual Handfasting Ceremonies

Handfasting is particularly meaningful within pagan and spiritual wedding ceremonies, where it can be combined with additional symbolic elements such as blessings of the four elements, sacred circle ceremonies or seasonal symbolism.

These ceremonies often feel deeply connected to nature and tradition while still being written specifically for the couple.

However, ceremonies can also be entirely non-religious. Many couples simply enjoy the symbolism of handfasting as a representation of their commitment.

Handfasting for Themed Weddings

Handfasting is also a popular ritual within Viking, medieval and historical themed weddings.

In these ceremonies the ritual can be adapted to reflect the atmosphere of the celebration, sometimes incorporating symbolic vows, mythological references or historical inspiration.

For themed weddings I can also perform the ceremony in costume if this fits the style of your celebration.

Why Couples Choose a Handfasting Ceremony

Many couples choose handfasting because it allows their wedding ceremony to feel personal, symbolic and memorable.

Unlike a registrar ceremony, which follows a fixed legal script, a celebrant ceremony allows complete freedom to include meaningful rituals and traditions that reflect your relationship.

For many couples, the handfasting moment becomes one of the most emotional and memorable parts of the entire wedding ceremony.
